Spurs fans were finally shown inside the new White Hart Lane last week for the first time after the club held a ‘fan familiarisation event’ on Sunday with 6,000 season ticket holders in attendance – the Lilywhites faithful were allowed to take in the south stand and podium areas while also experiencing the ‘magic’ beer system which will surely be the highlight for many.
However, ahead of their derby clash with north London rivals Arsenal this week, Spurs fans’ moods were uplifted further as the club announced a contract extension for Jan Vertonghen that will keep him at the club until 2020.
The Belgian defender has made 264 appearances for Spurs since his arrival from Ajax in 2012 and has become near indispensible for Mauricio Pochettino – the 31-year-old will, however, be out of action until January with a thigh injury.
Despite the good news though, many fans feel that their number five deserves more than just an extension, and they suspect this news is just delaying an inevitable move away.
